Redacting a published document, and answer deadlines
Black out part of a document without leaving the room publishing the original, and put a clock on diligence questions.
Redact what the room publishes
A PDF already in a Vault can be redacted from the Vault itself. The redaction opens in the same editor used elsewhere: mark what has to go, or search for a name and mark every occurrence, then apply. FileMentra removes it from the bytes, reads the result back to confirm it is gone, and the Vault publishes the redacted copy in place of the original.
The document keeps its number, its folder and its guests. Somebody who has already written a question about 2.14 is still talking about 2.14; they simply stop being able to read the part that was removed.
- The original file in your Drive is untouched. The redacted copy is a new file.
- The search forgets what it read and reads the new copy, so the removed words cannot be found through it.
- A Vault under legal hold refuses this, the same as it refuses every other change.
- Redacted documents are marked as such in the Vault list, so you can see at a glance which files were published trimmed.

A Vault can give every new question a number of hours to be answered in. The clock starts when the guest asks and stops when the answer is published, not when somebody drafts it: an answer written and never sent has not answered anything.
A question past its deadline and still owed is marked overdue in the room. Once answered the mark goes, and how long the guest actually waited is recorded instead, which is what both the deal team and an auditor end up asking about.
- Set the hours once per Vault. Zero keeps no clock, which is how every room behaved before.
- Routing a question to an expert is a good moment to give it its real deadline, so the deadline can be changed there.
- The evidence export carries each question's deadline, how long it took, and whether it was late.
